Against this model, pragmatic linguistics objects that the same sentence can be used to communicate an indefinite number of different messages that cannot be retrieved by simple decoding.
According to the inferential model, different versions of which have been developed in contemporary pragmatics, an utterance is a piece of evidence of the speaker’s meaning. Decoding the linguistic sentence meaning is seen as just one part of the process of comprehension—a process that relies on both this linguistic meaning and on the context in order to identify the speaker’s meaning.
