sleeping like a baby

Jay Leno inquires about how the losing nominee is doing -- just great.

Sen. John McCain, who made his first appearance on TV since losing the presidential election to Sen. Barack Obama, stepped into a comic's role last night.

"I've been sleeping like a baby,'' McCain told The Tonight Show's Jay Leno last night - "Sleep two hours, wake up and cry, sleep two hours, wake up and cry.''

McCain let out a little faux knee-slap for his well-timed, if well-worn, joke.

Leno asked about the morning after the election - going out to get a cup of coffee. "I didn't read the newspaper,'' McCain said. "I knew what it was going to say.''

Well, I’ve been sleeping like a baby,” said McCain, to warm, slightly relieved laughter from the studio audience. “I sleep two hours, wake up, and cry. Sleep two hours, wake up, and cry.”

A shocked pause, then laughter—less comfortable, this time. In fact, the studio audience—comprised mainly of military veterans, to mark Remembrance Day (known as Veterans Day in the US)—didn’t seem to know quite what to do.
